Chinese New Year is coming up! Preparations for the holiday begin on January 17, 2020, and it is the Year of the Rat. Chinese New Year officially begins on January 25th and it ends on February 4th. The Lantern Festival preparations begin on the 4th and the festival is held on February 8th.
The Rat is the first of all zodiac animals. In one myth, the Jade Emperor said the order of the zodiac animals would be decided by the order by they arrived at his party. The clever Rat tricked the Ox into giving him a ride to the party. As the pair approached the finish line, the Rat jumped down, landing in front of the Ox, making him the first arrival at the party.
The Rat is associated with the midnight hours and the Earthly Branch (地支—dì zhī) Zi (子). In terms of yin and yang (阴阳—yīn yáng), the Rat is yang and represents the beginning of a new day.
In Chinese culture, rats were seen as a sign of wealth and surplus. Because of their reproduction rate, married couples also prayed to them for children.
