Let’s talk about props for a minute. Imagine with me that you went to a faraway place where no one spoke your language. You are trying to communicate, but just can’t. So, you look for a different way to communicate your message. Oh! look! An apple! You pick it up and pretend to take a bite. You move your eyebrows up as if to say, “Can I eat this?”
This is a classic example of using a prop to convey your message. Hopefully, you will be able to eat that apple so you aren’t hungry anymore!
Props are important in the ESL classroom because you are using a universal way to communicate. Just as long as you both know what an apple looks like, you are golden!
